What Are The Basic Types Of Master’s Dissertations: Tips For Dummies

Master’s dissertation is one the most difficult academic papers that students write during their studying. Different topics need different types of papers. Usually, there are two approaches to write a research paper: theoretical and practical. However, even a theoretical paper needs some practical evidence sometimes, and a good practical research cannot be done without a decent theoretical background.

Usually the type of your paper depends on its topic. For example, philosophical topics are mostly theoretical, and don’t need plenty of practical evidence. On the other hand experimental physics will require many practical tests from you.

Besides the two approaches stated above, there is also another classification of master’s dissertations that may be useful for you.

  1. Empirical dissertation.
  2. If you choose this type of academic paper you’ll have to collect lots of data. For example, you’ll need to gather opinions of patients at a hospital, volunteers who help police, children who came to a play center, and so on. There are many ways to collect data, like interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, and observations. You may also collect data in a different way. For example, you may analyze data gathered by somebody else and look at it from another perspective. This will allow you to make interesting comparisons and draw parallels that were unseen before.

  3. Non-empirical dissertation.
  4. This type of paper is good for people that like to spend lots of time in libraries, read many books, think on various theories, and discuss them. This may be difficult for many students, because not everyone has skills to philosophize through the whole paper. Such subjects as philosophy or sociology are very good for this type of paper. You may take an interesting and controversial topic such as feminism, for example, and discuss it from different angles in your paper.

  5. Narrative dissertation.
  6. Usually, you’ll have to choose only between empirical and non-empirical paper. However, there are disciplines that may provide you with other ways to create your paper. When it comes to science subjects, you’ll notice that there are many dissertations that concentrate on a particular laboratory experiment and describe it in details, from the beginning to the end. This type involves a narrative approach. This approach might be also applied for collecting data through field trips that are often made in physical geography, for example.

This classification list may help you determine the type of your own paper. This will help you get a highest score for your work and structure your paper better.
