Dissertations Vs Theses: Learn The Main Differences

Some universities consider dissertations and theses the same thing. They are major papers that are usually required to graduate. Both of these papers are extremely important. They are very complex papers that require extensive research. The papers are expected to add to the overall knowledge pool for that industry.

Usually a student will have to submit a thesis statement to get a Master’s degree and a dissertation for a PhD. They do however have some differences.

  1. In a thesis, you will be conducting your own research. It will have to be original. A dissertation is usually a synthesis of any information collected on a topic.
  2. In a thesis, you should not give your opinion. A dissertation contains your thoughts on the subject.
  3. A thesis will include a hypothesis and should contain information regarding your research. A dissertation, you would prove that you understand the topic and include recent discoveries.
  4. A thesis statement is focused. It talks about a particular topic and tells the reader what you are trying to prove. A dissertation is your point on a specific topic.
  5. A thesis will add to the literature that already exists while a dissertation will analyze the existing literature.

Both of these papers are time consuming. There are a few steps that you will want to follow to ensure that you are writing a successful paper.

  1. Determine your subject
  2. The topic that you decide to write about is very important. If you don’t choose the right topic, you will struggle to write either one of these papers. The topic that you choose should be narrow enough to not be overwhelmed by all of the information. The topic should also be broad enough to be able to find enough information to write your paper on. The topic should also be interesting. You will be spending a lot of time researching and reading about the topic, so you want to make sure it is something that interests you.

  3. Create an Outline
  4. An outline is very important. It will help you organize your ideas and get them put in a logical order. The outline will also help you stay on track and not go off on a tangent.

  5. Thesis statement
  6. A dissertation and thesis will have a main point. Your thesis will have a hypothesis and the dissertation will have a thesis. Regardless of which one that you are writing, you want to make sure that you develop the thesis or hypothesis.

This should help you write your paper. Good luck and remember to get started right away. You want to utilize all the time that you can.
